King Kong : Review
May 27th, 2006Got a new movie review for you. It’s on the latest King Kong movie, by Lord of the Rings “legend” Peter Jackson. By the way, have you seen him lately? He lost over half his body weight and looks like a completely different person. Word is, Peter has had gastric bypass surgery to achieve his phenomenal weight loss. I’m not kidding - wait til you see him….
But I digress. Back to the movie review. King Kong, I can tell you this first off, is way too long. I’m not sure who was in charge of editing this movie, but it is L-O-N-G! Aside from the first hour moving very slowly, which I forgive because it is spent building up the character - Naomi Watts plays Ann and Adrian Brody plays her love interest Jack, a writer. Most of this movie is a love story, partly between Jack and Ann, and partly between Ann and King Kong himself.
The special effects are riveting at times, but grow tiresome at times as well, namely a scene where Jack Black’s director character and his men, including Jack get attacked by about ten different species of huge bugs. While I’ll say that it achieved it’s desired effect, to give you the heebeegeebees and make you think you have a bug crawling on you, the scene gets a little too long and I found my mind drifting off.
I like Naomi Watts’ acting though, and I have to say she stole the show (well, Kong stole the show actually, as did the other famous animated character Peter Jackson brought to life, Smeagol or “Gollum” in his LOTR trilogy). Other than my few critiques, I have to say I did enjoy the movie though.
My biggest complaint would be the length (could have easily taken at least an hour off this movie and still told a good story), and at times Jack Black’s director character got a little annoying, but that might just be me!
