  • Lady in the Water Review

    January 6th, 2007

OK, I hate to do this to one of my favorite directors, M Night Shamalyan, but I have to or else I’d be lying. “Lady in the Water” was M Night’s worst movie, by far. I’m a fan of Sixth Sense, The Village, and his other bigger movies, but this one really was a far reach to try to like.

The movie is basically a pure fantasy about a girl, a nymph, played by the ethereal looking Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron Howard’s daughter), who does an ok job at her role, but is given little to work with through a weak and far fetched script that might have done better if it took place in another world, not earth, amongst humans.

M Night usually does well with the far fetched, but this one was all too hard to swallow, and even a little full of itself. My boyfriend stopped watching it halfway through, and he also usually likes his movies. I watched it all the way through, hoping for a payoff ending, which is what M Night is usually known for. He gives himself a larger role than usual in this film too, which is kind of ironic, since it is his worst work yet. To make a long story short, the story is about a nymph, called a Narf, who is dropped off on earth to help unite the people of the blue world with earth, since they have been estranged since the dark ages.

She must meet a certain person within the day, and then will be allowed to return to the Blue World once she and this person have met, where she will be carried off by some mythical eagle (I know, I feel ridiculous even describing this film). Gosh, you know what. You’d have to see it, it’s actually too hard to explain. My grade for this movie is a solid D minus. Not quite an F.
