  • “Dexter” Review

    January 14th, 2007

If you don’t have an appreciation for a dark sense of humor, stay away from the new Showtime series this season called “Dexter”.  The show Dexter is about a man named Dexter, who is a serial killer.  But there is a catch.  Dexter is a serial killer who only preys on other serial killers.  Dexter, played by Michael C Hall, who also played one of the main characters in the critically acclaimed HBO series “Six Feet Under” and also did brief stints in the other HBO drama “Oz”, is a sociopath who we somehow root for, although I’m still not sure how they played that trick on us.

He was adopted along with his adopted sister by a cop dad who realizes early on through backflashes that occur almost every episode that Dexter is not a normal kid, and that he actually demonstrates all the early signs of becoming a serial killer.  He doesn’t seem to really experience any real emotions and he lacks compassion, empathy and sympathy.  In other words, he really lacks all human emotion and thrills at the thought of killing living beings, including animals.

Dexter’s father helps Dexter blend in and act like a normal person, but he helps Dexter realize that he must channel his killing instincts to do some sort of good in this world.  In other words, his father coaches him to seek out other people who are evil and kill them to feed his urge to kill.  What ensues is an interesting story about a mix of characters in Miami Florida, and an addictive show that you almost feel guilty watching because of its dark subject matter.  I’d recommend it, if you can handle this sort of thing.
