  • Grey’s Anatomy

    May 27th, 2007

One of my picks for my free month of Netflix was the first two seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, which I watch by myself, because I think my boyfriend would think it’s too much of a woman’s show.  I have to say, the show is definitely addictive, and I never understood what every woman thought was so attractive about Patrick Dempsey’s character Dr. Derek Shepherd, until now.  He is a good looking man, and he certainly has come a long way from “Buy Me Love” where he plays a nerd who pays a popular girl to hang out with him and it all ends up backfiring on him.

Katherine Heigl, whom I remember from a show I was also addicted to, at least for the first two seasons and then it got bad, “Roswell”, is really good in the show as Isobel “Izzi” a former model with a bangin’ body.  She plays her character as somewhat of a naive woman at first, and then she starts to show that no one can take her for an idiot, especially when she strips down to her bra and underwear after a male chauvenist intern has plastered pictures of her former modeling jaunt as a lingerie girl allover the locker room.

I like all the characters, even Sandra Oh’s hard-assed character who seems just plain annoying at first. We then start to see her break down a little and have a human side toward the middle of the first season.  Since Grey’s anatomy was actually a replacement show midseason, that is why there are not a lot of episodes in the first season, but I’m thoroughly enjoying the shows so far, and think that a lot of other people would too if they gave it a chance as not just another medical drama.  And ER needs to just stop being made if you ask me!

“The Shield” Loses It’s Edge for Me

    May 23rd, 2007

OK, I’m officially over the tv show about good cop/bad cop Vick Mackie, The Shield.  Is it just me, or is this season loaded with unnecessary machismo and some over the top killings as well as over the top machoness?  The type of machismo I’m talking about is best described in one particularly cheesy scene where Vick and the boys shoot bullets into Lem’s grave.  And yes,I’m still mad that Lem was killed off on that show, if you ask me, he was the saving grace of that show, and it shows now that he’s gone the show’s gone down the toilet.

This season is really pretty much picking up where the last one left off, just a few days after Lem was killed and his funeral had already taken place.  Vick is mad as hell that Lem was killed, and seems hell bent on catching who he thinks set up his killing, although it was really Shane, the idiot who killed him with a grenade because he thought he was going to give the boys up.

Shane is battling with guilt and seems to have a death wish for himself, especially after he finds out that Lem had no intention of selling the boys out to get off easier himself.  But it doesn’t make him any more likeable if you ask me.  He goes on a self destruction kick, volunteering for dangerous assignments, and makes viewers wonder if he just wants to end it all, well that and one scene showing him caressing a gun and contemplating suicide.  But of course, we couldn’t be so lucky.

Even Vick is getting on my nerves with his obsession to get Lem’s killer.  He seems to be overacting this season, and if I see one more determined, yet mad look on his face, or see him yell about Lem not breathing again, I’m going to vomit.  This show needs to be cancelled. Of course, people tell me since I’m behind on the season, I’ll like the newest developments, so I might change my mind, but I doubt it!

Netflix Free Trial - I’m Trying It

    May 19th, 2007

My boyfriend has been a member of Netflix forever, the only problem is, when I want a movie or a show to rent, he takes forever to put it in his qeu for me, or he forgets, so finally, I got sick of not seeing what I want to see, and signed up for the free Netflix trial that they offer to new customers, and if I like it, I’ll continue on with it at the program where you can get a few movies out each month.

I’m only sticking with the lower one because I figure he has it too, so he can put the movies we want in his qeu, while mine will be more of a supplementary membership for things like shows and workout videos that we want to try, or things like the first and second season of Grey’s Anatomy, which I’ve been dying to see, but unable to get him to rent because it’s a “chick show”.

I love Netflix because it’s so easy to go in and pick movies out, and many times the movies are available right away for shipping.  It’s got an easy to use interface that’s user friendly, and Netflix also has more movies than any other online service I’ve ever looked into, such as the Blockbuster online video rental.

The only better thing about Blockbuster is that if you live near one, you can drop your DVD’s off when you’re done with them and pick one out again right away right there in the store instead of waiting for them to be check in at Netflix before you get your next movie in the qeu shipped off to you for your viewing pleasure.

Netflix has tons of workout DVD’s, yoga, TV shows, movies and obscure documentaries.  Everything I could possibly think of from sixties and seventies movies that I typed in their search bar was ACTUALLY available, so even the pickiest movie watcher or tv watcher would probably be able to find what they are looking for at Netflix.

Seriously, I think if you like to watch movies, and you’re a renter at a video store still, you need to look into Netflix, I truly believe it’s the video store of the future.  Heck, of the present, if you ask me!

Spider Man 3 : Thumbs Halfway Down

    May 15th, 2007

I saw Spider Man 3 it’s opening weekend, with high hopes because I really enjoyed the first two of the Spider Man series, but I enjoyed the second one even more.  However, there was just something “wrong” with the movie, and I’m not quite sure that I can really 100% put my finger on it, but I know I walked out of the theater with the other 3 people I went to the movies with feeling disappointed and let down by what I thought would be a great movie.

We went to a Cinemark theater, which is notorious for it’s stadium seating, just so we wouldn’t get a bad seat, especially since my boyfriend is an avid comics fan and was looking forward to the release of this movie for months.  By the way, he was disappointed in the movie too, just so you can get an accurate perspective and don’t think I’m just being overly critical.

First of all, I think that Kirsten Dunst and Toby McGuire were great in the first two films, but in this one, it almost seemed as if their performances were lackluster.  Especially Toby’s, who seemed to be almost a caricature of his former character.  There are some scenes in the movie where McGuire character Peter Parker is acting out of character, and the desired effect is comedy, but the actual effect is a cringe effect.  Don’t get me wrong, some of the scenes did make me laugh, but some were just cheesy and over the top.

My biggest complaint about Spider Man 3, and the reason I’m giving it a bad review is that this one tried to tie too many story lines in with three villains and three separate story lines, never mind the Peter Parker and Mary Jane story. The results was half-assed attempts at each story line.

I would have liked to have seen more of the villain Venom, played by That Seventies Show’s Topher Grace with an adept acting hand I must say.  I liked Thomas Haden Church as the Sandman, but I liked Topher Grace’s Venom better, because he was more of an interesting twist to the story, with his embarrassed photographer’s revenge complex against Peter Parker, it added a nice plot twist and much needed grit to the story which at times tended to be overly sappy and over-acted.

Overall, I’ve gotta say, Spider Man 3 was a disappointment, and supposedly they’re already in talks to make more.  I hope they learned their lesson with this one and don’t try to ruin this franchise for good!

    “Babel” Causing Nausea?

    May 12th, 2007

When I first read the headline that Babel moviegoers were experiencing nausea and headaches, I thought it was some kind of joke, by an author who thought the movie stunk and this was their way of saying it in not so many words.

But apparently the movie “Babel” which is still being shown in theaters in some countries, although I believe it’s been out of our theaters for some time now, is causing some to complain of headaches and nausea, enough for them to report the side effects.

The authorities are posting warnings that the movie may induce nausea due to the content of the movie.  I’m assuming this may be due to the way the movie is shot,  because I do know that movies like Blair Witch project, which contained a lot of shaky camera effects and angles, made me feel nauseous, as did many others who saw the movie.

The warnings say that the movie uses a lot of strong effects, whatever that means, and warns moviegoers to leave the theater if they begin to experiences these symptoms.  Wild stuff!

Blood Diamond : A Decent Movie, Not Great

    May 9th, 2007

In my recent pay per view spree on DirecTV, I paid to watch the Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly movie “Blood Diamond”. Honestly, I didn’t know exactly what the movie was about when I bought it, I just usually like Leo’s acting and was curious after seeing previews for the movie months ago when it initially came out in theaters.

Blood Diamond is actually a fairly socially conscious movie about the diamond trade in the nineties and eighties, and how the US was paying for diamonds that it should not have been that were mined under tyranny and fear in a world where ten year olds were trained to carry machine guns and kill anyone that was caught stealing diamonds when the poor were panning for them in the rivers of Africa.

The movie does get the point across of the shocking atrocities that occurred in the name of diamond mining, and what English money will do to corrupt a poor nation that has found a precious natural resource that Americans are willing to pay handsomely for.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a diamond smuggler without a conscious who doesn’t care where the diamonds came from, only that he can make a fast buck off of them. His luck turns when a diamond miner who has snuck a huge diamond away and he meet up in a local jail.

He joins forces with the reluctant peasant to sell the diamond, all the while planning to steal it from him and go halves with a crooked army figurehead.

Enter Jennifer Connelly, a bleeding heart liberal journalist who is in Africa to photograph the atrocities and bring enlightenment and awareness to the Americans that fuel the trade unknowingly and help to put a stop to it.

There isn’t much chemistry naturally between her and Leo, so it’s hard to buy that he becomes a better man through the movie because of her.

The only other downside is there are a few cheesy lines in the movie that seem to smack of in-your-face activism and obviousness, and Leo’s British accent is a bit hard to swallow, but I did watch the movie the whole way through, and feel I was a little more educated about an era that I had no idea existed before.

“The Return” a Dismal Return for Sarah Michelle Gellar

    May 6th, 2007

OK, so I have to admit, I’m a fan of the cult favorite TV show that has been over for a few years now, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, but this poor excuse of a horror/suspense film called “The Return” which parallels the level of disdain I had for her other horror flick “The Grudge” was a waste of my pay per view money on DirecTV!

The move “The Return” had a very poor script and even worse acting my Ms. Gellar. I thought the same thing about the Grudge, so this may mean it’s curtain’s for Sarah’s movie career, because apparently she’s a much better TV actress than movie actress. Sorry Buffy!

The movie features a sketchy script with inadequate dialogue so that we don’t even know what’s going on half the time. One minute we see her morphing into another person, the next we see her having some sort of vision about a woman who was apparently murdered in pieces and parts that are hard to discern.

The worst part is, we’re supposed to care about this woman that was murdered, but we could care less, because it is totally unclear how this woman would have any connection to Sarah Michelle’s character. Confused yet? So am I.

To make a long story short, The Return stunk, big time. I can see why I never saw an ad for the movie. I ended up shutting the movie off when it still had about 45 minutes left, and I don’t usually do that very easily.

    Soprano’s Final Season

    May 3rd, 2007

Some people (note : mostly men) are complaining that so far the final season of the beloved HBO phenom “The Sopranos” which follows Tony Soprano, a mobster leader and his family, is boring so far with not enough action.  If they mean there hasn’t been a lot of mob hits and violence, I’m not quite sure what they’re talking about as the show is inherently toned with a violent aura.

Even the characters are violent are a daily basis, interacting violently, such as when Tony keeps teasing his sister Janice about being “easy” when they’re all liquored up one night at a resort, and Tony and Janice’s husband end up getting into a huge brawl.  Tony is bothered by it, but he doesn’t retaliate physically, instead he gives him his first hit job.

Also, the guy who’s supposed to take over after Johnny Sac dies of cancer is killed, leaving it wide open as to who is going to take over.  Now here’s where some people probably are having a problem with the show.  Normally violent, outspoken and power hungry guys who may normally be dying to take over the top spot are softening up, realizing that it’s a tough life, and trying to keep low profiles so as not to be the next guy to get whacked.

I have to defend the show’s honor here, because not only is it still an excellently produced and acted show, but this new twist is different, taking a different view of the mobster’s life and how they have to consider the chances that they could be the next guy getting killed.

Even Pauly doesn’t feel safe.  He sense he’s getting on Tony’s nerves and feels Tony may be sensing that he’s not as trustworthy as he once was (he’s loose on the lips), and worrying that maybe Tony’s thinking about whacking him (which, by the way he is).

My boyfriend did say the actor who plays Pauly hasn’t renewed his contract with the show for a while, so it could certainly take a turn for the worse for pauly, but it hasn’t yet.  Good thing, because he’s one of the staples of the show and is fun to watch.
